BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- Microsoft today announced that it
is mounting a hostile takeover of the European country of
Belgium, following an attack on Chairman and CEO Bill Gates
by a cream cake wielding Belgian.

Sources close to the situation have said that they currently
believe that the group responsible for the attack are probably
Linux activists. "That's just the sort of thing that these
fanatical Linux extremists would do," a Microsoft spokesman
said, referring to the generally non-violent yet creative
approaches often taken by the Linux community. In the words
of one Linux leader, "There was a little bit of each of us
  in that pie."

While not immediately available for comment, it is widely
believed that Gates sees the acquisition of the small country
the path of least resistance, rather than to deal with
the veritable swarm of Linux activists on a one by one basis.

In recent years, Linux has been the strongest opposition to
Microsoft forces. The announced acquisition of Belgium
represents the first bold move by Microsoft to bring under
control the global Linux movement. It is estimated that
Microsoft and Bill Gates have the combined financial resources
to purchase approximately 80% of Europe, but that further
acquisitions would require external funding without a new
operating system release. The release of Windows 98 is
  expected later this year.

While the deal still needs the approval of the European
Commission, it is expected to easily have the support of both
France and Germany, which in real terms is an automatic
  approval.
